The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will provide Morocco with a $200 million loan to support projects aimed at strengthening the country’s resilience to climate change, the Chinese Embassy in Morocco announced on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

According to Moroccan outlet Lareleve.ma, the financing will be directed toward priority projects, including the reinforcement of environmental and water infrastructure, as well as measures to protect economic sectors most vulnerable to climate risks.

Morocco is increasingly exposed to the effects of global warming. A World Bank report published in September 2024 classified the country as highly climate-vulnerable. Data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that Morocco’s average temperatures have risen by 0.2°C per decade since the 1960s, double the global rate of +0.1°C per decade.

This accelerated warming has contributed to a rise in extreme weather events, including heatwaves, floods, and droughts, which continue to impose heavy social and economic costs on the population.

Morocco became a member of the AIIB in 2019, joining a group of now 110 member states, including 19 African nations. Founded in 2015 under China’s leadership, the AIIB was created to finance infrastructure projects across its member countries. The institution is also seen as part of Beijing’s broader effort to challenge Western dominance in the governance of global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The $200 million loan marks one of AIIB’s most significant engagements in North Africa to date and reflects growing interest in funding climate adaptation initiatives across the region.
